Family Crafted Comfort: The Story Behind Matera

Hi! I'm Julian. After spending three years at the American University in Paris, I faced a common Parisian challenge: living in a tiny studio apartment . To make my space more livable and comfortable, I bought a sofa-bed advertised as a “365 nights a year” bed. Skeptical at first, I soon found it to be incredibly comfortable and convenient, allowing me to easily transition from sofa to bed regardless of when I needed to go to sleep. Setup was effortless and the sofa was comfortable in either configuration.

When I moved back to New York City, I searched for the same type of sofa-bed but found only complicated, expensive and uncomfortable options. My father, looking for a replacement for my old bed around the same time, faced the same struggle. Over the holidays, we realized there was a significant need for quality convertible sofa-beds in the U.S. similar to the one I found in Europe.

Determined to fill this gap, we partnered with two Italian companies, one renowned for its exceptional sleep sofa mechanisms and mattress combinations, the other for the quality of its sofas. That’s how Matera Sofa & Bed was born!

Our Mission

We then contracted with a top Italian sofa manufacturer to design and build stylish, comfortable sofas. Reflecting the quality of the materials and build, our products come with a limited 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.
